"Dawn of the Mummy," released in December of 1981, was one of those hard-to-find-on-video zombie films that kind of took on a mystique and the reputation for a truly horrifying gore-fest. I certainly wanted to be able to see it, but I never did until only a few years ago when I found it on DVD. Although it dealt with a ridiculously easy-to-awaken mummy (all it took were some hot lights), with the addition of zombie-like priests that he calls back to life to assist him, it feels more like one of the low-budget 80's Italian zombie flicks. Although offering some decent gore effects, mainly in the mummification ritual, and some bloody kills, it doesn't have much to recommend. But for completists, it's worth a watch, if only for the fact that it's one of the gorier Mummy films made, and brings a level of nostalgia for those loving the 80's horror films.
